Description

Sharing the same WDDR-001 designation as its Type 2 counterpart, this 1981-S Proof Jefferson Nickel (Type 1, Flat S mintmark) carries identical Class II distorted hub doubling showing a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that increases from left to right. The Type 1 is distinguished by its Flat S mintmark, which has a more rounded, slightly filled appearance compared to the sharper Type 2 Clear S. Although the doubling characteristics are the same because the same obverse die was used, the different reverse hub types create distinct collectible varieties requiring separate catalog entries. Reverse die markers include light die scratches on the rim below OF. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1981-S WDDR-001 Proof and attributed by Brian A. Ribar. The 1981 Type 1 proof is the more commonly encountered of the two mintmark types, as Type 1 production constituted the larger share of the proof run before the Mint switched to the Type 2 hub. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel for annual proof sets at San Francisco, this Type 1 proof Jefferson Nickel documents the same WDDR-001 doubling as the Type 2 but on the more available Flat S mintmark variety.
