Description
Eighteenth and highest-numbered entry in the current 1981 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1981-18 closes out the known record of rim die failures for this date as cataloged by Cuds on Coins. The 1981 Philadelphia cent occupies a historically significant position as the last complete production year for the copper alloy Lincoln cent. Struck from 95% copper, 5% zinc planchets weighing 3.1 grams, these coins are noticeably heavier than the copper-plated zinc cents that would begin production mid-way through 1982.
