Seventeenth in the sequence, CU-1C-1981-17 brings the 1981 Philadelphia cud census closer to the twenty-entry range that distinguishes the most thoroughly documented dates in the Cuds on Coins database. At this depth, the census begins to function not merely as a collector attribution reference but as a statistical sample of die mortality patterns at a major coining facility. The distribution of breaks around the rim — whether clustered near particular design elements or spread evenly around the circumference — can reveal mechanical tendencies in the presses or die installation procedures that predispose certain rim areas to earlier fracture. CU-1C-1981-17 adds one more data point to this distribution, its break position confirmed as unique within the census.
