Description
Sixteenth in the Cuds on Coins census for the 1981 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1981-16 represents another terminal die failure documented during what would prove to be the copper cent's final complete production year. The process of confirming a new cud variety at this census depth is non-trivial — the submitter must demonstrate that the break does not match any of fifteen previously documented positions, a task that requires detailed reference images and precise angular measurement. CU-1C-1981-16 cleared this hurdle and was assigned its census number accordingly. The 1981 Philadelphia cent was struck from 95% copper, 5% zinc planchets weighing 3.1 grams and carries no mint mark.
