Description

Eleventh in the census, CU-1C-1981-11 pushes the 1981 Philadelphia cud count past ten and into territory that demonstrates the remarkable thoroughness of the Cuds on Coins cataloging effort. Documenting eleven unique die breaks for a single date and mint requires not only that eleven distinct dies experienced rim failure but also that at least one example from each die survived in identifiable condition and was subsequently submitted for attribution — a chain of events that becomes less probable with each additional entry. The die that produced CU-1C-1981-11 generated an error whose rim break position differs measurably from all ten earlier entries, earning its own census designation. For collectors of Lincoln Memorial cent errors, the 1981 Philadelphia issue occupies a historically significant position as the last full production year before the composition change that would transform the Lincoln cent from a copper coin weighing 3.1 grams to a copper-plated zinc coin weighing just 2.5 grams.
