Description

First documented reverse rim cud on the 1980 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, CU-5c-1980P-01R cross-references as JNC-80P-1R in the Jefferson Nickel Cud census. The "R" suffix designates this as a reverse die break, distinguishing it from cuds that may appear on the obverse. Philadelphia resumed using the P mint mark on nickels beginning in 1980 — the first time a P mint mark had appeared on the denomination — making this one of the earliest P-marked Jefferson Nickels and an interesting host for a cud variety. A rim cud occurs when a section of the die rim fractures completely away, and each subsequent strike forces planchet metal into the cavity to produce a raised, featureless mass.
