Description

Appearing on the inaugural Susan B. Anthony Dollar — the first small-size dollar coin in United States history — this second documented rim cud for the 1979 Philadelphia issue records a die rim fracture where part of the die's rim gutter was lost. On the coin, this loss appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The resulting raised interruption contrasts sharply with the surrounding design detail, making cuds among the most visually dramatic die errors. Frank Gasparro designed both the obverse portrait of Susan B. Anthony and the reverse eagle-on-moon motif for this innovative but controversial small dollar, which was frequently confused with the quarter due to similar size. The 1979-P was the first year of issue, and die varieties from debut years carry added appeal for collectors interested in the early production challenges of a new denomination format.
