Description

The 1978 Medal GW-09-P6 Silver Restrike Washington Before Boston is filed under WASHINGTON BEFORE BOSTON Medals in the Washington Pieces (1783-1800) series. On March 25, 1776 Congress voted Washington a gold medal for the recovery of Boston. The dies were cut in Paris in 1786 by Pierre Simon Duvivier, with a bust modelled on Houdon's, and the gold piece passed to the Boston Public Library in 1876 (Baker). Baker lists the original reverse (No. 47), a second reverse whose dies stayed at the Paris Mint, which went on striking from them (No. 48), and United States Mint pieces from dies copied from a medal in 1860 (No. 49); Musante numbers the Paris and Mint issues GW-09-P and GW-09-US. It is catalogued as Musante GW-09-P6. PCGS lists it as #508963.
