Description

A European copper restrike of the Washington Before Boston medal produced circa 1830, cataloged as Baker-48 and Musante GW-09-P2A. This restrike was struck at the Paris Mint from an early generation of copy dies created to meet collector demand for the Comitia Americana series during the early nineteenth century. The Musante designation GW-09-P2A identifies this as a specific Paris die pairing distinct from the original Duvivier dies. The obverse presents Washington's military bust with the Latin dedication from the Continental Congress, while the reverse shows the Boston evacuation scene. European copper restrikes from this period are distinguished from later productions by their planchet characteristics, die state, and patina. The circa 1830 dating places this production during a period of renewed interest in American history and Washingtonia collecting in both Europe and the United States. Copper, approximately 68mm diameter.

Rarity Notes

Scarce. Early European restrikes predate the more commonly available U.S. Mint and later Paris Mint productions.
