(1880-1910) Silver Medal GW-09-P4, Repaired Dies Washington Before Boston
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A silver Washington Before Boston medal struck between 1880 and 1910 from repaired dies, cataloged as Musante GW-09-P4. By this period, the Paris Mint dies used for restrike production had developed significant die cracks and wear. Rather than retire them, the Mint repaired the dies by filling cracks and re-engraving worn areas, creating a distinctive die state recognizable to specialists. The obverse shows Washington's uniformed bust with visible evidence of die repair work, while the reverse retains the Boston evacuation scene. The "P4" designation in the Musante system indicates this is the fourth identified Paris Mint die pairing, distinguished by specific repair marks. Silver examples from this late restrike period were produced in limited quantities for collectors and dealers, as the Paris Mint continued to fulfill orders for the Comitia Americana medals well into the early twentieth century. Silver, approximately 68mm diameter.
Rarity Notes
Scarce in silver. Repaired die specimens are identifiable by characteristic die crack remnants and re-engraved areas, making them a distinct collecting variety.
