Description
A bronze Washington Before Boston medal struck from the Paquet obverse die created at the United States Mint between 1864 and 1873. After the original Duvivier dies wore out, the U.S. Mint commissioned Anthony C. Paquet to engrave a new obverse die that closely followed Duvivier's original design but with detectable differences in portrait style and letter spacing. The Musante catalog number GW-09-US1 designates this as the first U.S. Mint die pairing using Paquet's obverse. These Mint-produced restrikes were sold to collectors through the Philadelphia Mint's medal sales program during the Civil War and Reconstruction era, a period of strong numismatic interest when the Mint actively produced copies of the Comitia Americana series. The reverse die remains faithful to the original Boston Harbor evacuation scene. Bronze, approximately 68mm diameter, struck on planchets typical of U.S. Mint medal production of the period.
Rarity Notes
Uncommon. U.S. Mint restrikes from this period are more available than original Paris Mint strikings but still command collector interest as official Mint products.
