1976-D Variety WMDO-001
Error
Description
Sharing the same master die origin as its Type 1 counterpart, this WMDO-001 appears on the 1976-D Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar — identifiable by its squat, wide reverse lettering, which replaced the tall, thin lettering of the Type 1 during the Bicentennial production run. Because master die doubling propagates to every working die derived from that master, the Class II doubling on the dates and LIBERTY is identical in origin to the Type 1 version, yet the two are tracked separately due to their distinct reverse designs. Cataloged as CONECA MD-1-O-II and Wexler 1976-D $1 WMDO-001, the doubling is visible on the obverse regardless of reverse type. Die markers include a die scratch through the lower E of LIBERTY and a die scratch through the O in OF, though these markers vary across different working dies since multiple working dies were hubbed from the same master. The Type 2 reverse lettering change occurred mid-production in 1975-76, making both types available to collectors. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety demonstrates how a single master die anomaly can appear across multiple reverse design variants. Reverse: Die scratch through the O in OF.Submitted By: Not notedCross References: None known Obverse: The markers will vary on the different working dies.
