Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1956-2b. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to mark the centennial of Brandeis University, founded in 1948 in Waltham, Massachusetts. Named after Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish justice of the United States Supreme Court who served from 1916 to 1939, the university was established as a nonsectarian, coeducational research institution sponsored by the American Jewish community. The 1956 centennial celebration referenced the broader legacy of Brandeis's contributions to American jurisprudence, including his pioneering advocacy for the right to privacy and his opposition to monopolies. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze medal represents the standard composition used for publicly available Mint medal duplicates during this period.
Rarity Notes
Produced by the U.S. Mint for public sale. Mintage figures for 1950s-era commemorative medals were typically modest. Exact production numbers not separately reported.
