Description

Accompanying the first-documented CU-5c-1975D-01, this second cud for the 1975-D Jefferson nickel carries the JNC cross-reference 75D-5, placing it one position after the "-01" variety in the Jefferson Nickel Cuds registry (which assigned that piece JNC-75D-4). The sequential JNC numbers suggest these two cuds may have been documented in close temporal proximity, possibly from the same collector's submission or the same roll-searching session. The 1975-D nickel occupies no special place in the series from a design or rarity standpoint -- Felix Schlag's portrait and Monticello reverse continued their long run without modification -- but the die break census tells its own production-floor narrative. Each cud represents a discrete event: a specific die, at a specific moment during its service life, experienced a catastrophic rim fracture that went undetected (or was tolerated) long enough for the resulting cud coins to enter the production stream and eventually reach circulation or bank-wrapped rolls. Whether the two documented 1975-D cuds occurred on obverse or reverse dies, at different rim positions, and at different points in the year's production schedule are all details that enrich the variety's documentation. Collectors who locate both CU-5c-1975D-01 and CU-5c-1975D-02 can compare their cud positions and sizes to appreciate the variety of forms this single type of die failure can take within the same date.
