Description

Third rim cud documented for the 1975 Denver Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as of June 2021 with no independent cross-reference numbers assigned by other attribution organizations. Three cuds from a single date-mint combination on a denomination not typically associated with high cud incidence suggests that either the die steel batch or production parameters at Denver in 1975 created conditions favorable to rim fracture. Denver struck approximately 401 million nickels in 1975, driving each die pair through millions of strike cycles during its service life. The rim area of any die concentrates mechanical stress because the collar, planchet edge, and striking force converge at the periphery, making it the most vulnerable zone for fatigue-induced fracture. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course.
