CU-5c-1975D-03 Rim Cud

Description

Third rim cud documented for the 1975 Denver Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as of June 2021 with no independent cross-reference numbers assigned by other attribution organizations. Three cuds from a single date-mint combination on a denomination not typically associated with high cud incidence suggests that either the die steel batch or production parameters at Denver in 1975 created conditions favorable to rim fracture. Denver struck approximately 401 million nickels in 1975, driving each die pair through millions of strike cycles during its service life. The rim area of any die concentrates mechanical stress because the collar, planchet edge, and striking force converge at the periphery, making it the most vulnerable zone for fatigue-induced fracture. When a section of the rim breaks away completely, the resulting void fills with planchet metal under striking pressure, producing the raised featureless mass characteristic of cud errors. Jefferson Nickel cuds from the mid-1970s are moderately collected, with the denomination's copper-nickel composition providing good die life relative to harder-wearing materials.
