Description

WMHR-001 on the 1974-D Washington Quarter is the terminal entry in the documented Denver Mint SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse census, catalogued under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. With 1974 as the final year of the SD-1 hub's documented production range, this 1974-D business strike completes the Denver side of the seven-year WMHR-001 record spanning 1968 through 1974. The pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads — the SD-1 identification key — remains the first diagnostic to confirm on any coin submitted for WMHR attribution, and it applies unchanged to this 1974-D entry as it did to the 1968-D entry that opened the Denver census. The center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath is the hub-derived doubling characteristic shared across all years. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
