Die clashes are an inherent risk in high-speed coining operations, where the press cycles rapidly between striking positions and any failure of the planchet feed mechanism can allow the dies to contact each other directly. When this happens, elements of the obverse design — primarily Lincoln's portrait and lettering from "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," and the date — are impressed into the reverse die, while the Memorial building, columns, and reverse inscriptions are simultaneously transferred onto the obverse die.
