Description

WMHR-001 on the 1973-S Washington Quarter is the Proof entry in the SD-1 master hub family for 1973, struck with polished dies and burnished planchets at the San Francisco Mint. Catalogued under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI, this Proof coin shares its hub ancestry with the 1973-P and 1973-D business strikes: all three descend from the same SD-1 working master hub. On Proof coins, the polished field and frosted devices provide enhanced contrast for examining the pointed-leaf diagnostic and the center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath. The hub-derived doubling is identical in character to that on business strikes — no Proof-specific modification of the doubling pattern occurs, since both Proof and business strike working dies were produced from the same hub generation. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
