1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

1972 WDDO-012 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread shows an extra horizontal bar on the 2 of the date, just over the normal bar. The coin also carries the master die doubling seen on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST for this date. At obverse Stage A, a small gouge touches the left side of GOD's G near its middle; a short SW-to-NE scratch passes through the upper left of the 9 in the date; and from the lower left corner of LIBERTY's L, a scratch heads SSW to the rim. At obverse Stage B, most of these have been abraded away. Traces of a die clash show over the date, two long scratches run SW from the base of LIBERTY's R, a SW-to-NE scratch crosses above the BE in LIBERTY, and many more scratches cover the obverse. On the reverse at Stage A, a small gouge sits just NW of the Memorial roof's upper left corner, and a scratch runs alongside the right side of AMERICA's second A. A small gouge (dot) lies just right of the top of the fifth column, a scratch reaches SW from the left side of the sixth column, and another dot sits in the middle of the eighth bay, roughly two-thirds of the way up. At reverse Stage B, most of these have been abraded away; west-to-east scratches cross E PLURIBUS UNUM, a scratch links the right cornice's tip to the C in AMERICA, and many more scratches cover the reverse. Brian Allen submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 10-O-VIII and Crawford as CDDO-013, and its Coppercoins number is 1972P-1DO-011.
