1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009 / DDO-009

Description

1972 WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-009. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-109 (033.59); Wexler writes it FS 01-1972-109. Wexler records a strong clockwise spread on the crossbar of the date's 2, and notes that LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST show the master die doubling that is known on this date. In obverse stage A a diagonal die scratch juts from the rim just under the B of the designer's initials and another heads NNE off the R of LIBERTY at its top right. In stage B both are gone; a die gouge lies near the rim NE of the 2, and a small one lies to the SE of TRUST's R. Reverse stage A has a die scratch running NW from the upper right upright of the N in CENT. In stage B it is gone, a weak dot lies between the I and T of UNITED, level with their centers, and a small dot sits near the top of the third Memorial bay. Charles D. Anderson submitted stage A, with an improved photo taken from a coin of Franklin Idelowitz, and John A. Wexler submitted stage B. CONECA lists the die as 9-O-VIII and Crawford as CDDO-009; its Coppercoins number is 1972P-1DO-009. VarietyVista also credits Charles D. Anderson and describes it as a strong spread that forms an additional bar over the date's 2. It identifies the obverse as ODV-027a (Not Re-Engraved) and uses marker codes UVC-2292 and DMR-012.
