1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006 / DDO-006

Description

1972 WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-006. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-106 (033.56); Wexler writes it FS 01-1972-106. Wexler describes a moderate clockwise Class I spread on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, the LIB of LIBERTY and the 2 of the date. In obverse stage A several die scratches run SW from IN down as far as LIBERTY; a short die gouge joins the rim to the D of GOD at its upper left corner; die scratches run SSW to the top of Lincoln's head, one from the base of the O in GOD and two from the base of the D; a die scratch runs SSE from the lower right curve of the R in TRUST; and from the upper right of the U in TRUST another scratch heads NNW to the rim. In obverse stage B the die has been heavily abraded, the stage A markers are gone and the doubling looks mushy. On the reverse, stage A has a die scratch running NW to SE just under the left leg of the first A in AMERICA, two strong die scratches curving WNW across the Memorial roof from above the fifth bay, a small die gouge just right of the upper bar of the E in CENT, and a short die scratch running west from the lower left of the first column. In stage B the two roof scratches are still strong and the scratch at the first column is weak but visible; new scratches run WNW to ESE through PLUR of PLURIBUS, UN of UNUM and over the right side of the roof, and the scratch under the first A of AMERICA can no longer be seen. John A. Wexler submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 6-O-I and Crawford as CDDO-006; its Coppercoins number is 1972P-1DO-006. VarietyVista, crediting Vernon Popp, describes a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, on LIB in LIBERTY and on the date's 2. It identifies the obverse as its design variety ODV-027a (Not Re-Engraved) and uses marker codes UVC-2289 and DMR-009.
