Description

WMHR-001 on the 1972-D Washington Quarter records the Denver Mint occurrence of the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse doubling in 1972, under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. The 1972 entries at Philadelphia and Denver share the same hub ancestry and the same pointed-leaf diagnostic, as master hub tools were not exclusive to a single mint — the same hub was used to produce working dies shipped to multiple facilities. This cross-mint applicability is one of the most educationally significant aspects of master hub varieties: a single manufacturing decision at the die-production level resulted in a variety that collectors may encounter on coins from any mint that received dies from that hub generation. On this copper-nickel clad 1972-D business strike, the center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath is the hub-derived doubling signature. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
