1972 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1972-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes a Class I spread in the counterclockwise (CCW) direction on the date and on the letters of both LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. At obverse Stage A, a long, light scratch runs north off the top of LIBERTY's T, and a short vertical gouge lies SSE of the N in IN. At obverse Stage B, the scratch from the T can barely be seen, the Stage A gouge is gone, and a small gouge sits south of IN's N. Obverse Stage C is a very late die state (VLDS): a long crack runs SW to NE through the hair of the upper head, and a short, strong gouge reaches SW from the upper left of the I in IN. Reverse Stage A is an early die state (EDS). A small gouge lies just left of the roof's left side, above the left cornice, and another small gouge touches the upper left of UNITED's I. Reverse Stage B is a new reverse die, with a small gouge (dot) under ONE's N and a gouge right of the base of the T in CENT. At reverse Stage C, a long, straight gouge runs south beside the lower first S in STATES on its right; a clash mark runs from the Memorial's bottom to the upper left of the N in ONE; the left Memorial base has a crack and a chip; the right cornice has a chip; and cracks run down the first two and last three columns of the Memorial. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 3-O-I, and its Coppercoins number is 1972D-1DO-003. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
