1971 Variety WMHR-001

Description

Entering its fourth year of documentation, the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse variety appears on the 1971-P Washington Quarter as WMHR-001, catalogued under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. The longevity of this master hub — spanning 1968 through 1974 — underscores how heavily a single hub tool could be worked during this era of quarter production. The pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads, the defining SD-1 diagnostic, is the most reliable means of confirming attribution on any coin purported to belong to this hub family, and it applies equally to this 1971 Philadelphia business strike as to the 1968 through 1970 examples already documented. The center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath is the hub-derived doubling pattern. Individual die markers on each working die will differ. The 1971 Washington Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad at the Philadelphia Mint — the first year without silver in the proof quarter series as well. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
