1971-D Variety WMHR-001
ErrorDescription
WMHR-001 on the 1971-D Washington Quarter is the Denver Mint entry in the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse census for that year, classified under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. The master hub doubling recorded on 1968-D through 1974-D quarters originates in a single hub from which all affected working dies were produced, meaning the pointed-leaf diagnostic and the center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and lower wreath are intrinsic to every coin from every die in this group — not individual die variations but a systemic, hub-level characteristic. For attribution purposes, examining the leaf shape to the left of the arrowheads to confirm the pointed tip is the most direct step in differentiating SD-1 from SD-2 coins in the same date range. Die markers on individual 1971-D working dies will vary. This copper-nickel clad business strike was produced at Denver. Cross-reference: CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI; WMHR-001, 1971-D.

- Discovered by Various Cross References: CONECA: SD-1-R-II-C+VI Comments: Because this was a master hub it was intended to be used over a period of several years. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
