1971-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-VI, WDDR-001 on the 1971-D Kennedy Half Dollar displays extra thickness and notching on the stars from 2:00 to 6:00 and on AMERICA — the hallmarks of a Class VI doubled die reverse. This variety forms the reverse half of a combination doubled die pair: the obverse die used with this reverse is independently cataloged as 1971-D WDDO-004 (Cherrypickers FS-50-1971D-101), meaning every coin struck from this die pair carries hub doubling on both sides. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the DDR photos are noted as needed for further documentation. The 1971-D was the first year Kennedy Half Dollars were struck exclusively in copper-nickel clad composition, following the discontinuation of the 40% silver alloy used from 1965 through 1970. As WDDR-001 — the first doubled die reverse cataloged for the 1971-D — this variety holds a foundational position in the Kennedy Half die variety registry. The combination with WDDO-004 makes it especially collectible, as both sides reward careful examination under magnification. Die Markers: Obverse: Obverse is WDDO-004, a CCW spread from a pivot at about 10:00 shows on IGWT, date, ERTY, and hair details under ER. X-shaped die scratches midway up back of nose. Diagonal die scratch midway between eyebrow and hair west of eyebrow. Reverse: Die scratch SW from star between L and A in DOLLAR.
