Description

Carrying the same progressive left-to-right spread signature documented on other pivoted Jefferson Nickel DDRs, DDR-003 on the 1970-S exhibits medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS that increases from left to right across both inscriptions. Die markers UVC-1377 and DMR-020 confirm this working die. The progressive intensification follows the pivoted hub doubling mechanism: the secondary hub impression was rotated slightly around a pivot point positioned to the left of the affected inscriptions, generating minimal displacement near the pivot and increasingly larger offset as distance from that point grows rightward. On UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the U at the left end shows the least detectable spread while the final A carries the most pronounced displacement; on FIVE CENTS, the F exhibits minimal offset while the S shows the greatest separation. The medium intensity classification means this progressive spread is visible at moderate magnification, with the rightmost letters in each inscription providing the clearest entry points for examination. The involvement of FIVE CENTS — the denomination below Monticello — alongside UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — arcing above the building — places the affected areas in both the upper and lower zones of Felix Schlag's reverse design, indicating the hub's pivot point fell outside the die face rather than between the two inscriptions. The 1970-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel). DMR-020's relatively high marker number reflects thorough documentation of the 1970-S die population. Begin examination at the rightmost letters of each inscription under 5x to 7x magnification where the progressive spread reaches its peak.
