Description

Displaying a classic Class V pivoted hub doubling signature, DDR-001 on the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel shows light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA that increases progressively from left to right across both inscriptions. Die markers UVC-1375 and DMR-018 confirm this working die. The progressive left-to-right intensification is the defining characteristic of pivoted doubling: the secondary hub impression was rotated slightly around a pivot point situated to the left of the affected inscriptions, producing minimal displacement near that pivot and increasingly larger offset as distance from the pivot grows rightward. On E PLURIBUS UNUM, this gradient means the E shows the least detectable doubling while the M shows the most; on OF AMERICA, the O carries minimal offset while the final A exhibits the greatest displacement — a measurable progression that serves as a built-in authentication feature. As DDR-001, this variety anchors the doubled die reverse catalog for the 1970-S, representing the primary or most significant documented reverse hub doubling for this date-mint combination. The 1970-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel), with Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse positioning E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in arcs above the building. The progressive spread is best observed by comparing letter thickness at the left and right extremes of each inscription under 7x to 10x magnification with consistent lighting.
