1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Attributed as WDDR-001 for the 1969-S Lincoln Memorial cent by the Wexler team, this doubled die reverse exhibits a complex doubling pattern affecting multiple design elements with varying spread directions — a characteristic that suggests either a Class IV offset or a combination of rotational and translational hub displacement. A spread to the west shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the flanking dots, with the strongest spread on the E of EPU and the left dots. Simultaneously, a spread towards the rim shows on the lower letters of USA and the upper letters of ONE CENT, with the strongest spread showing on the T in CENT. The dual-direction spread pattern — westward on the motto and rim-ward on the denomination — indicates the hub shifted along a complex vector between impressions rather than following a simple rotational path. Die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, no significant markers are noted, while on the reverse, a die gouge (dot) can be found below the left side of the E in UNITED. This reverse die gouge serves as the primary confirmation point for attributing specimens where die wear may obscure the more subtle aspects of the doubling. The variety should not be confused with WDDR-002 or WDDR-003 for this date, which display different spread characteristics.
