1969 Variety WMHR-001

Description

WMHR-001 on the 1969-P Washington Quarter carries the CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI cross-reference and represents the second year in which this same Working Master Hub Reverse doubling appears on Philadelphia business strikes. The SD-1 master hub — identified by its pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads — was used in quarter die production from 1968 through 1974, and the doubling it imparted was identical in every working die made from it. This is the defining characteristic of master hub varieties: the spread does not originate in any single die but in the upstream hub tool, so the same variety designation applies across all coins from all dies made from that hub in a given year. On this 1969-P copper-nickel clad business strike, the spread toward the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath, decreasing from left to right. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
