Description

Swoger catalog number D1969-6a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the state of Alabama. Alabama was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819, as the 22nd state, carved from the Mississippi Territory. The state's history encompasses the Creek War of 1813-1814, the antebellum plantation economy dependent on enslaved labor, the Civil War during which Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederacy, and the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s centered in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma. By its sesquicentennial in 1969, Alabama's role in the civil rights movement was fresh in national memory, with the Selma-to-Montgomery marches having occurred just four years earlier in 1965. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
