Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-1b. This standard-size silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 200th anniversary of San Diego's founding in 1769. The city traces its origins to the arrival of the Sacred Expedition of 1769, when Spanish soldiers and Franciscan missionaries established both a military presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala. San Diego became the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of what is now the United States. By its bicentennial in 1969, San Diego had grown into a major metropolitan area and military hub, home to extensive Navy and Marine Corps installations. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This is the standard-size silver version in the D1969-1 series.
Rarity Notes
Standard-size silver medal. Produced in smaller quantities than the bronze variants. Exact mintage not separately reported.
