Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-2c. This standard-size bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah. The completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, was one of the defining achievements of 19th-century America, connecting Sacramento, California, to Council Bluffs, Iowa, across nearly 1,800 miles of plains, deserts, and mountains. The ceremony featured four commemorative spikes — two gold, one silver, and one a blend of iron, silver, and gold — though only the famous golden spike driven by Leland Stanford is widely remembered. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This small bronze version provides the most accessible format in the D1969-2 Golden Spike series.
Rarity Notes
