Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-2b. This 63mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a special strike commemorating the centennial of the Golden Spike ceremony. On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads joined their tracks to complete the first transcontinental railroad. The project, authorized by the Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862 and 1864, employed thousands of workers including large numbers of Chinese immigrants on the Central Pacific and Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans on the Union Pacific. The "Special Strike" designation indicates a distinctive production quality or finish. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This 63mm bronze medal matches the diameter of the silver version in the D1969-2 series.
Rarity Notes
