Description

Attributed by the Wexler team as WDDR-002 for the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent, this doubled die reverse variety displays its doubling on the lower right side of the sixth column to the left of the statue's legs within the Lincoln Memorial design. The localized nature of the doubling — confined to a specific architectural element of the Memorial — suggests either a very minor hub rotation with a pivot point near the affected area, or a subtle offset that is visible only where fine parallel lines (the column fluting) provide sufficient resolution to detect small displacements. No previously known cross-references have been assigned beyond the Wexler designation. Obverse die markers include die scratches running from the P of PLURIBUS northward to the rim at approximately 11 o'clock, providing a reliable identification feature independent of the reverse doubling. Reverse die markers are more numerous: die scratches from the left base of the E in STATES through UNITED to the T, die chips on columns 11 and 12 of the Lincoln Memorial (counting from left), and additional characteristics that collectively distinguish this die from all other 1969-D reverse dies. The die chips on columns 11 and 12 are particularly useful for rapid visual identification because they create visible interruptions in the normally continuous vertical lines of the Memorial columns. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc at the Denver Mint.
