1969-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Exhibiting a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 1:00, the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar WDDO-004 shows doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the TY of LIBERTY. The pivot at 1:00 means design elements farthest from that clock position display the greatest separation, while features near the pivot show progressively less displacement — a characteristic signature of Class I rotational hub doubling. The CW rotation creates secondary images positioned clockwise from their primaries on each affected element. Obverse die markers reveal that the hair surrounding the R of LIBERTY has been heavily polished, suggesting the Mint attempted to extend the die's service life. The reverse carries a short die gouge extending north from the top of the second S in STATES. The 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at Denver in 40% silver, part of the reduced-silver composition used from 1965 through 1970 before the transition to copper-nickel clad in 1971. Submitted by Timothy J. Wissert and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1969-D 50-cent WDDO-004.
