1968-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Affecting two of the longest reverse inscriptions on the Jefferson Nickel, DDR-007 on the 1968-S issue shows light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA. Die markers UVC-1349 and DMR-033 confirm this working die. The doubling's reach across both the national motto and a portion of the country identification indicates a hub displacement direction that intersected the upper reverse arcs broadly, producing detectable letter offset in both text zones. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse arranges these inscriptions in concentric curves above the building, and light spread at this position tends to manifest most clearly on letters with strong vertical strokes — the T and S in STATES, and the P and U in PLURIBUS — where even minor lateral offset creates visible edge doubling. The 1968-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a business strike in standard copper-nickel composition, during the first year mintmarks returned to coinage after the 1965-1967 removal. UVC-1349 and DMR-033 position this die within a well-documented sequence of 1968-S varieties, and collectors should rely on these markers to distinguish DDR-007 from other 1968-S doubled die reverses that affect similar inscription areas.
