Description

Manifesting as light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM rather than clearly separated secondary images, DDR-006 on the 1968-S Jefferson Nickel represents a near-coincident hub doubling where the secondary impression almost overlapped the primary. Die markers UVC-1348 and DMR-032 identify this working die. Extra thickness doubling broadens letter strokes without producing the gap between impressions that characterizes spread-type doubling — the secondary image reinforces rather than offsets the primary, making detection more subtle. The 1968-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a business strike in standard copper-nickel composition. San Francisco resumed using the S mintmark in 1968 after the three-year mintmark-free period (1965-1967) during the silver transition. The high DMR-032 number suggests extensive documentation of die characteristics for the 1968-S production. On Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above the dome in fine lettering where stroke broadening can be detected by comparing letter widths against a known normal example. Magnification of 7x to 10x with careful lighting is recommended for this detection method.
