1968-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
The strongest and most significant doubled die reverse for the 1968 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, DDR-001 exhibits medium spread on STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM — a classification notably stronger than the light spread found on DDR-004, DDR-006, and DDR-007 for the same date-mint. Die markers UVC-1343 and DMR-027 confirm this working die. The DDR-001 designation reflects either the first-documented or the most prominent reverse variety for the date, and its medium spread classification supports the latter interpretation: the hub displacement produced clearly discernible secondary letter images at moderate magnification, distinguishing it from the subtler light-spread varieties cataloged under higher numbers. Medium spread across both E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA means the doubling is verifiable in two separate inscription areas, providing built-in cross-confirmation. The 1968-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard copper-nickel composition as a business strike, part of the first year mintmarks returned after the 1965-1967 removal period. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse places both affected inscriptions in arcs above the building, where the mirroring of doubling across two text zones establishes DDR-001 as the benchmark variety against which other 1968-S DDRs are measured.
