1968 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Recognized across three major attribution systems — CONECA 1-R-V, Cherrypickers FS-10-1968-101, and Wexler Variety ID 1968 10¢ WDDO-001 — this primary doubled die obverse for the 1968 Roosevelt Dime displays a Class I counterclockwise spread on the date, designer's initials JS (John R. Sinnock), IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY. The Cherrypickers FS-10-1968-101 listing confirms its status as a widely collected and commercially significant variety. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch northeast of the eight in the date, while the reverse shows a die gouge to the right of the lower M in DIME. The 1968 date holds special significance in Roosevelt Dime history: it was the first year San Francisco produced proof dimes after the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set hiatus, and Philadelphia resumed mintmark-less production of circulation strikes. This variety occurs on a Philadelphia circulation strike, where the absence of a mintmark was standard practice until 1980. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the CCW spread across four distinct design areas — date, initials, motto, and legend — indicates substantial hub rotation during die production, creating doubling visible at moderate magnification across multiple zones of the obverse. The multi-system cross-referencing makes WDDO-001 one of the most thoroughly documented Roosevelt Dime doubled dies in the catalog.
