1968-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Displaying both triple and double spread on different design elements, the 1968-D DDR-006 is a Kennedy half dollar doubled die reverse cataloged as UVC-397 DMR-011 in the VarietyVista system. The reverse shows light triple spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA combined with medium double spread on the stars under those letters and between the rays, creating a layered effect where the legend and heraldic elements exhibit different degrees of hub displacement. Struck in the 40% silver composition used for Kennedy half dollars from 1965 through 1970, this Denver Mint issue bridges the transition between the original 90% silver and the copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1971. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A places both the reverse and obverse at early die state. Stage B, the mid-die state, and Stage C, the late die state, both remain unconfirmed. The combination of triple spread on the lettering with double spread on the stars indicates a complex hub displacement sequence that affected different areas of the die with varying intensity, making this one of the more mechanically interesting doubled die reverses documented on the early Kennedy half dollar series.
