1968-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-131 and DMR-008, this 1968-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDR-004 was struck in the first year of 40% silver clad composition for business strikes — a reduction from the 90% silver used in 1964 and the 40% silver SMS strikes of 1965 through 1967. The 1968-D also marked the return of regular proof and business strike production after the three-year Special Mint Set interlude. Die state documentation records the progression of both reverse and obverse through their working lives, tracking the development of die markers as striking pressure accumulated. The Denver Mint produced substantial quantities of Kennedy Half Dollars in 1968, feeding collector demand for the still-new denomination that had debuted just four years earlier. The doubled die reverse shows hub displacement on the reverse design elements, where Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle — with its shield, olive branch, and arrows — provided detailed relief elements capable of registering secondary hub impressions. DDR-004 contributes to the early Kennedy Half variety census for a pivotal transitional year in the denomination's composition history.
