Description

The 1968-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001 is the primary doubled die obverse for the Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar of 1968, exhibiting a light triple spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. The tripling — three overlapping hub impressions — creates a layered effect on the motto and date digits, though the light classification means the secondary and tertiary impressions sit close to the primary and require careful magnification to resolve. The 1968 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 40% silver clad composition used from 1965 through 1970, making it one of the last silver-content half dollars for general circulation. Die progression data cataloged under UVC-125 and DMR-002 documents three stages. Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed. Stage B provides the most detailed diagnostics: the D mintmark is set high, the obverse is at Mid Die State, and the reverse has progressed to Late Die State — a split condition indicating the reverse die aged faster than its obverse partner.
