Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1967-3b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of the Alaska Purchase of 1867. Secretary of State William Seward negotiated the purchase of the vast Alaska territory from Russia for $7.2 million, transferring 586,412 square miles — an area more than twice the size of Texas — to the United States. The formal transfer ceremony took place on October 18, 1867, at Sitka, when the Russian flag was lowered and the American flag raised. The purchase was ratified by the Senate on April 9, 1867, by a vote of 37 to 2, despite widespread public skepticism. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal represents the precious-metal alternative to the bronze version in the D1967-3 series.
