1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

The first cataloged Wexler doubled die reverse for the 1967 Lincoln cent, WDDR-001 exhibits a close Class II spread towards the center visible on the designer's initials FG and the bottom right of the second A in AMERICA. Class II doubled dies result from distorted hub doubling, where the hub or die deforms slightly between impressions due to uneven pressure distribution, producing a spread that converges toward the center of the design rather than radiating outward as in rotated or pivoted hub doubling. The towards-center characteristic of Class II spreads means the secondary image appears to move inward relative to the primary, creating a distinctive compression effect on the affected design elements. The obverse carries several die markers: two short die scratches run WNW from the top left of the R in TRUST, and a short die scratch runs north from the top right of the bowtie. On the reverse, a die scratch runs south from the bottom of the Memorial to the top left of the N in ONE, and a die gouge can be found southwest of the U in UNITED. These die markers, distributed across both surfaces, provide efficient attribution checkpoints beyond the doubled die pattern itself. The 1967 date represents the final year of the Coinage Act of 1965 no-mint-mark era, with mint marks scheduled to return to all denominations in 1968. The year's business strike output of 3,048,667,100 cents was the largest of the three-year period. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
