Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under the Wexler system, the 1967 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-011 presents Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with very close doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM — so close that the secondary impression nearly overlaps the primary, requiring careful magnified examination to detect. Class II doubling from a tilted hub produces a characteristic fanning pattern, and "very close" indicates the tilt angle was minimal, resulting in only slight displacement of the affected design elements. Die markers include no notable obverse features, while the reverse shows a short die scratch to the lower right of the N of CENTS and two die scratches inside the upper portion of the C of CENTS. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1967 WDDR-011, the absence of a proof designation indicates this was a business strike die — though 1967 represents a unique year in American numismatic history because no proof sets were produced from 1965 through 1967, replaced instead by Special Mint Sets (SMS) as the Mint transitioned from silver to clad coinage. All 1967 nickels therefore lack a mint mark regardless of their striking facility, as mint marks were temporarily removed during this transitional period. Eleven doubled die reverses for the 1967 nickel reflects the continued occurrence of hubbing anomalies during this period of significant Mint operational change. Brian Ribar's attribution expertise, particularly in Jefferson Nickel varieties, has contributed extensively to the documentation of Class II doubled dies across the series, and WDDR-011 represents another data point in understanding the frequency and characteristics of distorted hub doubling on this denomination.
