Description
Designated CU-1C-1966-17, this seventeenth cud variety for the 1966 Lincoln cent is part of the most extensively cataloged cud population among the three no-mint-mark years. Cuds vary considerably in their visual impact: a large cud can obliterate a significant portion of the obverse design, such as part of LIBERTY, a date digit, or a section of Lincoln's portrait, while a small one stays at the periphery. However, even modest cuds hold value within the specialized cud collecting community, where completeness within a date is a recognized pursuit. Each cataloged variety represents a die that experienced its own unique rim fracture, and the specific position of the cud on the finished coin serves as the primary identification feature. The Coinage Act of 1965 had removed mint marks from all U.S. coins during this period, meaning 1966 cents bear no mint mark. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1966-17 and attributed by Cuds on Coins. The cent had been struck in 95% copper and 5% zinc since tin was dropped from the alloy in 1962. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet.
