Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1965-4b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate Ellis Island, the iconic immigration station in New York Harbor that served as the gateway to America for over 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. At its peak, Ellis Island processed up to 5,000 immigrants per day, with arrivals undergoing medical and legal inspections in the Main Building's Great Hall before being admitted to the United States. The island was designated a national monument in 1965, the same year this medal was struck. Over 40 percent of all living Americans can trace at least one ancestor to an arrival through Ellis Island. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal completes the series honoring New York City's national monuments alongside Federal Hall, the Museum of Immigration, and Castle Clinton.
