Description
Swoger catalog number D1965-2b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor the American Museum of Immigration, located at the base of the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The museum was conceived in the 1950s to tell the story of immigration to America, and President Eisenhower laid the cornerstone in 1957. The museum opened in 1972, showcasing exhibits on the diverse waves of immigrants who arrived in the United States from the colonial period through the modern era. Liberty Island itself served as a gateway to America for millions of immigrants who passed through nearby Ellis Island. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal is part of a series honoring national monuments in New York City.
