Description
Swoger catalog number D1965-1b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate Federal Hall, the historic building at 26 Wall Street in New York City. The original Federal Hall served as the first capitol building of the United States under the Constitution, where George Washington took the oath of office as the first President on April 30, 1789, and where the first United States Congress met to draft the Bill of Rights. The original building was demolished in 1812 and replaced by the current Greek Revival structure, designed by Ithiel Town and built as a customs house between 1833 and 1842. It became a national memorial in 1939 and a National Historic Site in 1955. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal is part of a series honoring New York City's national monuments.
